Network Administrator - Chicago, IL

Our client is in need of a Network Administrator for their Network Operations Center (NOC). This is a 6 month contract-to-hire in the West suburbs of Chicago.

Qualifications:

Associate’s Degree in Computer Science or related field required, Bachelor’s degree preferred or other specialized technical training.

Minimum 3 years experience in managing applications in production environments with a specialization in Networking.

Minimum 1-2 years in-depth experience with at least one enterprise-level hardware (Sun, HP, CISCO or Juniper)

Thorough understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP and other networking concepts and technologies. Familiarity with frame relay, MPLS, administering firewalls, or analysis of sniffer packets a plus.

Advanced troubleshooting and problem resolution associated with applications and hardware as well as batch and backup job scheduling.

Ability to maintain high quality of work while supporting projects and operational activities.

Certifications are a plus (A+, Network+, MCSA, MCSE, CCNA, etc.).


Responsibilities:


Administrators supports day to day and project activities to ensure execution of applications on production systems. Works with development staff, engineering staff, service management staff to ensure application delivery (service levels) are met. This position includes diagnosing complex problems with applications, operating systems, and hardware. They also write scripts to implement automation of batch or backup processing.

They perform automation techniques to streamline the processing of batch and backups to ensure smooth and consistent operation.

They test and analyze scripts provided by others prior to implementation. Through the testing process, they analyze the results meet with expectations and will consult with the users and support personnel on the functionality of the script to determine an appropriate schedule for automation.

Maintains a forward-looking perspective to identify improvements in process, areas for automation, including writing of scripts to facilitate consistent and repeatable execution of recurring batch, backup and other processes. Identify areas for training opportunities.

Collaborates with development and engineering teams to identify requirements for and develop batch and backup job schedule programs.

Creates/Updates/Maintains batch and backup job schedule documentation to support efficient operations and audit requirements. Trains Computer Operations staff on schedules and processes.

Provides 2nd level troubleshooting of business applications and software, including analysis of problem, support for complex production systems and applications to ensure availability for the business and students. Provides expert knowledge of the applications used by the data center to facilitate improvements in the performance and effectiveness of the applications; this includes in-depth analysis of the application to troubleshoot problems with the application or software.

Jointly maintain knowledgebase of troubleshooting solutions and documentation.

Prepares and completes audit requests for batch, backup and scheduling to demonstrate compliance.

Mentor and train other team roles on established procedures and deployed technologies.

Provide escalated support and maintain communication with campuses and business units for related support activities.

Communicate with vendors to open incidents, troubleshoot vendor products and to obtain best practice recommendations.

Analyze statistics produced by systems monitoring to identify opportunities for improvement and utilization/capacity trends.
