Networking Academy has instituted an incentive program to encourage students to pursue the CCNA Security certification. For a limited time, qualified students can obtain vouchers for significant discounts on the CCNA Security IINS (640-553) certification exam fee.

The incentive program will start December 18, 2009, and run through July 31, 2010, which coincides with the end of Cisco Fiscal Year 2010. Students who have recently completed the CCNA Security course and who have qualified for a voucher will see a link to request the CCNA Security voucher appear on their Academy Connection personal page.

Q. What is the purpose of the Cisco CCNA® Security student certification exam discount voucher incentive program?

A. The purpose of this incentive program is to:

● Encourage interest in the Cisco® CCNA Security course and CCNA Security certification.

● Create an incentive reward for students who achieve a high standard of performance in their studies, demonstrated by a score of 75% or higher on their first completion of the CCNA Security final exam.

● Encourage qualified students to pursue CCNA Security certification through a one-time discount opportunity for the IINS (640-553) exam.

Q. How much of a discount does the CCNA Security certification exam voucher provide?

A. Eligible students will receive a 60 to 75% discount on the IINS 640-553 examination fees. The discount rate is tied to the World Bank Country Classification level of the country in which the student resides and takes the exam. The applicable discount amount will be provided along with the voucher.

Q. Who is qualified to receive a CCNA Security certification exam discount voucher?

A. To sit for the CCNA Security exam, the student must hold a valid CCNA certification. To qualify for a voucher, a student must successfully complete the CCNA Security course with the following level of performance: achieve at least a 75% passing mark on their first attempt at the final exam, and have a P (pass) grade entered by their instructor in the course grade book.

Q. What is the process for obtaining a CCNA Security certification exam discount voucher?

A. Eligible students should see a link to request a voucher on their Academy Connection homepage. The link will remain active for one year or until the end of the voucher incentive program (July 31, 2010), whichever comes first. Q. What is the duration of the incentive program?

A. The incentive program begins December 18, 2009 and will continue through July 31, 2010.

Q. What will happen at the end of the incentive program?

A. Networking Academy and Learning@Cisco continually evaluate the effectiveness of certification incentive programs and reserve the right to end, extend, or modify them. We will provide timely announcements of any changes.

Q. How long will my CCNA Security certification exam discount voucher be valid?

A. The link to request your voucher will remain active until the program ends on July 31, 2010, and the voucher will expire on October 31, 2010.

Q. If I qualify for and receive a CCNA Security discount exam voucher, and find that I cannot use it, can I give it to someone else to use?

A. No. Networking Academy discount exam vouchers are intended for use only by the individual who earned the voucher. Any attempt to transfer a voucher, whether by sale or gift is a violation of Cisco policy. Cisco reserves the right to revoke any current or future Cisco certifications for individuals who engage in this type of activity. Maintaining high standards of compliance helps protect the value of Cisco certifications.

Q. How does Cisco manage possible ethics or policy considerations raised by the provision of discount vouchers?

A. Cisco is dedicated to the highest standards of legal compliance, ethical behavior, and accurate disclosure to the public. Various organizations may have gift rules that either limit or prohibit their employees from accepting anything of value or benefit above a specific dollar amount. We respectfully ask potential participants in this voucher program to first confirm that it complies with your employer's ethics guidelines and other applicable laws and regulations. Participation in this program implies that you have confirmed it is appropriate under your organization's rules to accept this voucher. Vouchers are not transferable. From the March Faculty Advocate Newsletter

Joanne Wagner (Computer and Internetworking Technologies)
Completed all the exams in January and became recertified for the following: Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA); Cisco Certified Networking Professional; CCNA Security; Cisco IPS Specialist; and Cisco Certified Security Professional. She is now actively certified until 2013.

Are IT Certifications Really Important?

The following comes from TechRepublic's article, "10 Reasons IT Certification Will Be Important in 2009". I know that 2009 has come and gone, but these 10 reasons still apply in 2010:

A recent TechRepublic’s article entitled “10 Reasons IT Certification Will Be Important in 2009” , provided the following10 good reasons why IT certifications are more relevant than ever:

1. Job Retention – Lay-offs are the norm right now and the people who are not being laid off are the ones with the most skills and knowledge.

2. Salary Maintenance – Many companies, especially city and state governments, are asking employees to take salary cuts. With a certification, companies will be much more likely to pay you what you’re really worth. That way, if you’re forced to take a salary cut, you’ll be making what you should be making, so it’ll hurt a lot less.

3. Hiring and Promotion Eligibility – New and timely certifications are the key to standing out in a heap of resumes and having a leg up on the competition.

4. Career Improvement – Most IT professionals do their job and only their job. There aren’t many opportunities to gain more responsibilities, challenges and therefore more pay, unless you’re promoted. But how many times have you been promoted lately?

5. New-Generation Certs Increase Relevance – Everything in technology needs reworking. Certs are not an exception. As real-world needs evolve, so must certifications and so must you!

6. Organizations Will Become More Discriminating – Organizations are outsourcing their computer services and support to save money, but they need to be sure that the consultants they hire are competent. So show ’em your cert!

7. New Products Will Gain Momentum – Out with the old, in with the new! Who is going to have an upper-hand on new product upgrades? Well, as soon as you get certified…YOU!

8. Organizations Must Minimize Downtime – Downtime and repair of anything IT can cost a company a ton of money. Cert guys ensure a speedier recovery.

9. Organizations Need to Reduce Costs – A Kotler Marketing Group study published by CompTIA proved that certifications enable organizations to reduce expenses, identify knowledge gaps and improve productivity.

10. Confidence Proves Handy During Turbulent Times – You need this more than anything right now. Pick yourself up and get your certification.
