Typical Internship Assignments/Tasks

Students often ask me, "What are some of the responsibilities of an intern?". Although internship job responsibilities vary from organization to organization, typically they involve one or more of the following tasks/activities:

1) Help Desk Support
2) Assist with repairing, maintaining, and upgrading of computer networks
3) Assist with Local Area Network (LAN) support of hardware and software issues
4) Assist with telecommunication system installs
5) Assist in Wide Area Network (WAN) support
6) Setting up and maintaining user desktops, laptops, phones
7) Assist with router and switch installs and configuration
8) Assist in troubleshooting Layer 1, Layer 2, and Layer 3 issues
9) Assist local, regional, and national service providers with troubleshooting of routing issues (IP, OSPF, BGP, ISIS)
19) Assist with installation and maintenance of computer-related equipment and software
11)Assist with installation and maintenance of internetworking equipment and software (switches, routers, firewalls, and sensors)
12) Assist with installation of new desktop computers, servers, and computer related equipment (printers, peripherals)
13) Assist with repairing or replacing non-functioning computer equipment and/or peripherals in a timely and most cost-effective manner
14) Assist with installing and maintaining all required security systems (virus, firewall, spam, adware) on computer equipment.
15) Assist with maintain and updating all required computer and internetworking images.
16) Assist with tracking computer, internetworking equipment for inventory purposes.
17) Assist with support of software license compliance.
18) Assist with maintaining database records of all equipment (purchases, placements, repairs, and final dispositions)
19) Assist with maintaining a working knowledge of all computer related equipment in order to facilitate timely troubleshooting and repairs.
20) Assist with data backup of servers.
21) Assist with maintaining a wide range of communications network components such as the physical media, routers, bridges, gateways and related network management components.

5) Internet Service Providers

6) Financial, Educational, Health Care, Securities, networking, and telecommunication organizations.
